This is the story about Mother Courage, who runs a canteen wagon that follows the army and sells the soldiers drink and items of clothing, during the ‘Thirty Year War’. The play illuminates how humans tend not to learn from their sufferings and this important point is made very clear in Brecht’s typical epic form of theatre, with its mixture of poetry and comical effects, where the dramatic highlights are accentuated by music and singing.

(Berlin version, 1948/49) – Paul Dessau composed the music. The term of copyright for this version, with music by Paul Dessau, expires on 31 December 2049.
