Nine-year-old Maria is an adopted child and she lives with her parents Morten and Birgitte in a flat where everything has been arranged in an orderly manner. Maria’s peculiar friend Thomas lives upstairs in a messy flat. He plays the guitar and sings songs. Maria wishes to be a princess in a school play, but soon she is not sure whether she is not already taking part in a play or whether her everyday life is reality. Her parents lie to her and to each other. It is as if when Maria leaves the rooms the adults become someone quite different – she can hear what they say through the walls. But Bo Hr. Hansen leaves room for comedy and subtlety and it is this mixture of play and seriousness always seen from the level of the child’s view, which makes it relevant to children and adults alike.
