Three stories unfold in the same room of the same house during the span of one hundred years: past, present and future. In part one a man gives the house to his daughter-in-law on condition that she goes to bed with him. Her revenge is his doom. In part two a man leaves his woman. A stranger seeks her out in her night of despair and gives her back her strength when her husband and his new mistress arrive to collect their remaining stuff. They had better not done so. In part three a man lies dying. His daughter and his son turn up at his death bed each with their longing for him. However, he has more important matters to deal with. Three sides of the same story are shown in dense and unsentimental dialogues: longing and the impossible quest for love. The characters of the play are unhappy. They are lonely, unhappy, sexually depraved, desperate, grieving and doubting. Even those who appear to be happy are only randomly afflicted by happiness – and only on false illusions and borrowed time. Three dreams of a harmonious life in a house with a garden and sun become three beginnings of the end.
