A young woman, Thérèse is forced into marrying her ailing cousin Camille, as his mother wants someone to look after him after her death. The marriage is dead and nobody is happy. When Thérèse falls in love with a friend of the family, Laurent and they commence a relationship, the situation deteriorates. The lovers see only one way out of their predicament – killing Camille during a boat trip on the river. After the murder guilt and angst consumes the couple, whilst their love is shattered by the memories from their crime.
