In 1721, the Norwegian-born Dane and priest, Hans Egede, travelled to Greenland with his wife and a few dealers to do missionary work and establish commercial relations. They had the hope of meeting the old Scandinavians but instead they found the Eskimos. The play begins in 1721 at the arrival to Greenland and continues to 1728 when the militant governor, Paars, arrives with his regiment to find a road over the inland ice to the opposite shore. This attempt fails the following year. In 1735, six years later, the smallpox epidemic reigns in Greenland and subsequent to the death of his wife, Egede decides to return to Denmark. This is a stimulating drama with fine roles.
