After two safe years at a mental hospital, the middle aged and mother-fixated Elling is, along with his good natured room mate Kjell Bjarne, let out into the so called real world. The play unfolds as a subtle tale about two men, who generally do not seem more neurotic than so many other people but nevertheless have to overcome some mental blocks, in order to gain the kind of life that some call normal.
