An historical drama about freedom: The freedom to think, to speak, to believe and to love. It is 1634. In the small French town of Loudon Jeanne – the rejected nun – accuses the priest, Grandier of having possessed her by the devil. This is an event, which starts an avalanche of political intrigues, religious fanaticism and human poverty. A blood wave of religious hysteria and suppressed desire breaks out. This is the merciless report of one of the most macabre cases in history of mass hysteria and manipulation. It is the story of the short route between sense and cruelty, and what happens when a society is carried away. The text is based on the true story of the French priest Urbain Grandier (1590-1634), who was a thorn in the side of the religious as well as political rulers and who was burnt on a fire for sticking to his freedom of expression.
