Edward Kleban

Edward “Ed” Kleban (1939 - 1987) was an American musical theatre composer and lyricist. A graduate of New York's High School of Music & Art and Columbia University, Kleban wrote the lyrics for the Broadway hit A Chorus Line. He and composer Marvin Hamlisch won the 1976 Tony Award for Best Original Score. He was a teacher for many years at the B.M.I. Musical Theater Workshop. Kleban created the Kleban Foundation in his will. The annual awards, each in the amount of $100,000 over two years, are given to the most promising librettist and lyricist in American musical theatre.
