The play is a tribute to all chorus dancers whose hard work is in demand but is rarely noticed by the critics. The musical is a line of vignettes put together by each of the 18 applicants hoping to occupy one of the 8 places in the chorus. Pushed by the stern and fairly unknown director Zack, they each reveal more and more about themselves as the rehearsals progress, which inevitably makes it easier for Zack to make the final decisions. Among the applicants is Cassie, previously a top dancer who has had a relationship with Zack and is now less successful; also the voluptuous Val who has had her attributes enlarged with silicone and Paul who humbly shares his experiences as drag queen, etc. Orchestration: Reed I: Piccolo, Flute, Alto Flute (or Bb Clarinet), Bb Clarinet and Alto Saxophone Reed II: Flute, Eb Clarinet (or Flute), Bb Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet and Alto Saxophone Reed III: Flute, Oboe (or Bb Clarinet), English Horn (or Bb Clarinet), Bb Clarinet and Tenor Saxophone Reed IV: Flute (or Bb Clarinet), Bb Clarinet, Eb Contra Bass Clarinet (or Bassoon), Bassoon and Baritone Sax Trumpet I & II (both double Flugelhorn, 1st Trumpet optional double on Piccolo Trumpet) Trumpet III (and Flugelhorn) Trombone I Trombone II Trombone III (Bass Trombone) Percussion I & II Harp Bass (Acoustic Upright and Electric “Fender” Bass) Guitar (Acoustic w/gut strings, Acoustic w/steel strings, Electric Guitar and Banjo) Keyboard I: (Acoustic Piano, Celeste and Electric “Fender Rhodes” Piano) Keyboard II: (Electric “Baldwin” Harpsichord and Electric Yamaha Y-30” Organ with “Leslie” Speakers Keyboard II is played by the Conductor)
