The action in this historical drama takes place between 1939 and the end of World War II. It focuses on Anna Sperber, who is earning her living as a toilet lady on the main train station. Around her is her leftist brother, a frivolous cousin, a Jewish doctor and an SA officer and above all the timid and half-Jewish travelling salesman, Hugo Semmler, who is unable to cope with life alone. Anna and Hugo become a couple and use all of their strength to get through the difficult times. They split up, but find each other again only when it's too late. A huge role for a mature actress.
