This play is an anti-war allegory that aims at illuminating the fact that humans have always possessed the need to conquer and destroy each other and how this urge has managed to remain throughout centuries, now causing an actual danger of total ruin of mankind, rather than just being a mere threat. The actions that take place throughout the play are seen through the eyes of the soldier’s wife and the author keeps a humorous distance to it all, which is very typical for Ustinov.
