The story takes place in Copenhagen in a not too distant future. Europe is dominated by the party, The Hermeneutical Light Corps, which is having a summit meeting in the capital city with great coverage by the media. Rufus is an acknowledged poet. Slowly he senses how his poetic freedom is threatened by the new government. When Rufus is alone he calls on the Birds. The birds like poetry and only by reflecting ourselves in the birds we can hold on to our humanity. But the conditions in society are quite different and Rufus is soon accused of high treason, as well as terrorism and is on his way towards death row.
