The sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912 remains the quintessential disaster of this century. A total of 1,517 souls-men, women and children-lost their lives (only 711 survived). The musical TITANIC examines the causes, the conditions and the characters involved in this ever-fascinating drama. It deals with issues such as class, immigration and mankind's vulnerability at odds with nature. The story follows passengers and crew members who actually existed and were aboard the Titanic back in 1912 - however, the central character of the TITANIC musical is the Titanic herself. Titanic opened on April 23, 1997 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It won five Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical.
