THEY ARE PLAYING OUR SONG is a hilarious romantic performance about an established composer (not unlike M. Hamlisch) and his relationship with a comical and ambitious young female songwriter (again not unlike C. B. Sager who at the time was M. Hamlisch’s steady girlfriend and co-writer)
So firstly there is Vernon Gersch, a neurotic composer always bantering on and finding pleasure in revealing personal problems to a tape recorder. Likewise there is Sonja Walsk who is a neurotic author with plenty repartees at hand as well as a wardrobe full of old stage costumes.
Together they try hard at keeping a professional relationship concurrent with a personal one, though the latter is constantly put to the test by Sonis’s ex-lover who frequently rings her, well aware that she has still got feelings for him.
