Edward is a teacher retiring after forty-five years of service. But his plans for an imminent celebration to mark his retirement are derailed when current students learn that he used to dish out corporal punishment. Outside, a mob of angry schoolchildren are protesting, preventing him and his wife from leaving the house, and now their estranged daughter Anna has arrived, complicating things due to the emotional scars from her own past as well as her ideological rivalry with Edward.
