In a small shoddy flat, the black woman Mother DuClos houses spiritual séances for a bunch of superstitious people. A woman in the background accuses her of deceit and calls her an alcoholic fake who only wants to swindle money out of people. However, in the midst of the assembled crowd about to leave the room, a friendly spirit is present – an 8-year-old girl.
