“Four and a half years ago Jung was my doctor, later he became my friend and in the end he was my poet, that is to say my lover.” the Jewish Russian Sabina Spielrein wrote in a letter for Sigmund Freud in 1909. Based on diaries, articles and letters, Hampton has written the professional story about the diagnosed hysteric Sabina and the unprofessional story about the patient’s love for her analytic. A relationship indirectly leading to the break up of Jung and his mentor Freud, thereby splitting up the psychoanalytic movement. Through this stormy love story the greatest story about the pioneering era and establishing phase of the psychoanalysis is told – and the story about the rivalry between the older, rational Freud and the younger more instinctive Jung. Between them is Sabina, gradually split between Jung who has her love and Freud who borrows her ideas.
