Thomas is a playwright. He is absorbed with the theme of innocence, and is convinced that innocence is to be found in childhood. He successfully envisages incidents of his own childhood – and is horrified upon learning that innocence and goodness are not necessarily correspondent matters. Abruptly he is trapped in a labyrinth of doubt, leading him through sin and paradise and back to earth again.
