Play in one act
1969
Shortly after the publication of this paly, is was linked to LANDSCAPE because of the entwined monologues, though probably not as a conscious choice from Pinter.
This play revolves around three people; Rumsey, Ellen’s first lover who has just left her, advising her to find a younger man. Hence she meets Bates whom she moves in with despite the fact that she still loves Rumsey.
So the play forms a poetic and literary sound image of three lonely and unhappy people who desperately attempt to fill out their empty space with words and silence.
