This play is a disconcerting view of torture and terrorism. Belbel's drama deals with a woman who is taken hostage and is subjected to a series of amputations while the terrorists await ransom from her husband. Ultimately she is put to death. The play reflects on topics such as political power, the blood that undermines human capacity for reason, the oppressive role of the group to the detriment of the individual, the bonds of affection between parents and children, or the hegemonic role of the modern woman. A really interesting play – extreme and at times grotesquely funny.
