During February 2006 this Swedish dramatization of the Italian author and professor, Umerto Eco’s, novel IL NOME DELLA ROSA, was performed for the first time at the Göteborg Stadsteater in Sweden. We are in the 1300’s and the story takes place in an Italian monastery where the English/French monk and former inquisitor, William of Baskerville, and his apprentice, the Benedictine novice Adso from a monastery called Melk in southern Germany, come to solve a mysterious murder riddle. Therefore they arrange a meeting between the disputing fractions in the Catholic Church. Brother William is the detective and quickly discovers that the monastery has a lot of skeletons in its closets and that the murders are connected to the politics and heretical rituals of the time.
