This outrageous comedy by the irreverent author of ‘The Ruling Class’ pits laughter against the Black Death rampaging in France in 1348. Society and its institutions are in chaos. While the Pope gives audiences through a mirror, flagellants roam the countryside offering redemption through pain. Pitted against them and against all despair are Father Flote and his merry band of touring red-nosed comics, whose weapons are bad jokes, bawdry and laughter.
