The play offers a rather unconventional way to further one’s career. The insignificant main character, Chuck Baxter furthers his, by lending out his flat to various superiors from the insurance company he works in, so they have a hideout for their non-marital escapades. Among them we find J. D. Sheldrake whose mistress is the lovely Fran who Chuck unfortunately also fancies. Though his feelings are not in vain as she finally returns his affections after he saves her from having attempted suicide because J. D. does not wish to leave his wife.
