The Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh settles down in the southern French town Arles in 1888 hoping to create a collective of Impressionist painters including his friend Gauguin. The word gets around fast among the city’s xenophobic inhabitants that a red-bearded artist is looking for models, but no one dares to approach the artist. Only the postman, Roulin, addresses Van Gogh with curiosity and understanding and slowly they develop a friendship around art.
