This American version was written by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit years before Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the highly acclaimed ‘Phantom of the Opera’ that had its opening in London. This show was originally written for the musical genre and has a superb dialog.
In this version, the beautiful Christine is a self-taught street singer who is discovered by the champagne prince, Count Philipe de Chandon. The ‘Phantom’ Eric, is the illegitimate child of a ballerina and the managing director of the theatre. When Eric hears Christine’s singing he becomes obsessed with her, as her voice reminds him of his Mother and so secretly he offers her singing lessons. However, one day their secret is revealed….
