This untamed one act play has been published in book form along with two others, all taking place in and around New York: RIVERSIDE DRIVE and CENTRAL PARK WEST – all starring the archetypical Woody Allen New Yorkers. Allen himself staged OLD SAYBROOK along with RIVERSIDE DRIVE, titled WRITER’S BLOCK at Atlantic Theatre Company in New York, 2003. Two couples are barbecuing in the heat of august in a luxurious house with a pool and panorama windows in the posh Old Saybrook northeast from New York City. They carry on with their worriless carreer-lives and discuss everything from nature to philosophy. The married couple David and Jenny is visiting Jenny’s sister Sheila and her husband Norman who are celebrating their 7th year together. Suddenly, they get unexpected visitors whom drastically change their afternoon. A talkative guest shows up with his wife: a mysterious couple with a past in the fancy house. This leads to a series of more or less embarrassing revelations which reveal that Sheila has been cheated on by her loved one through a long period of time. And David surprisingly has a dramatic side to him, which Norman knew nothing about. OLD SAYBROOK is a crazy “sex farce”, which describes catastrophic relationships and life beneath the perfect façades. Can anyone forgive and move on? Where is the line drawn between fidelity and infidelity and how do you revive the passion in a relationship? An entertaining play with both perspective and heart.
