The story takes place in a raw and perverted urban environment in which whores, pimps, police agents and criminals exist side by side as if they were running around in dark sewers. The characters nightmarishly emerge from a chaotic universe whilst various sexual deviations surface: The pimp beats up his whore, but is also tortured by the police, a humiliation he rather enjoys. The victorious rich Jew takes advantage of his power over all who are controlled by their instincts, and he does so with a form of cynical enjoyment. A provocative play – perhaps one of Fassbinder’s best – , which has not yet been performed on a German stage due to anti-Semitic accusations.
