Set in a field, on the edge of a cliff, this anthropomorphic satire, revolves
around a leadership struggle in a herd of donkeys. Montagu is not happy
as leaders of the herd keep getting assassinated and he’s just been made
next donkey leader. Being more of a poet than a political animal, he
knows he will be a useless leader but the power goes to his head. His
schemes for eliminating a rival and war with the ponies comically backfire
and the herd want change, herds always want change, one wants them all
to jump off the cliff for better life in the lush fields far below. By the time
Montagu has to fight a duel with a bull, he knows his time is up, but still
time to leave a legacy and it’s a very fitting legacy for a useless leader.
