In DIE MINDERLEISTER (The Underachievers, 1988) the steelworker Hans and his wife, Anna, lose their jobs and, consequently, their house and their dignity. After a personal intervention by Austria's minister for work and science--presented in one of several imaginary and grotesque scenes that employ characters from Hans's and Anna's favorite television shows - Hans finds a new job at his old plant. He is ordered to report any substandard performance by coworkers, but he cannot overcome his scruples. He puts his own name on the list and jumps into the furnace.
