Max’s mother has sacrificed everything to remain with Max. She and Max live in a
boarding house and sell newspapers in the city and she has devoted her life to her
son’s well-being. He is her son and it’s her job to look after him and that’s all there is
to it. But Max is 40 and he yearns for independence which he finds in a friendship
with a young junkie named Maureen and in a rich and liberating imagination.
