They are queens in separate countries; with separate beliefs and measures. Besides the fact that they are cousins, they have only one thing in common: The hate towards each other and the love for the same man. The queen of Scotland, Maria Stuart has been imprisoned in England for 19 years. She fled there to seek help from her cousin, Queen Elisabeth I. However, things did not turn out quite the way she has planned. Catholic Maria Stuart has claimed the English throne and when protestant Elisabeth feels the threat from other catholic rulers, Maria Stuart becomes a part of a political power struggle, and a deadly rival. Maria Stuart is still a relevant story about ambition and selfish political power struggles. Peter Oswald has authored this new version as a mixture of prose and poetry. Premieres in Scandinavia at the Malmö Stadsteater in 2009.
