The Waiter, Franz, comes into an unexpected inheritance over night, which makes him a very rich man. He resists all temptations to lead a life in grand style, and sticks to his beloved daughter and continues to run “THE SMALL CAFE" . With this comedy Benatzky turned to boulevard comedy and shows the best side of himself as a theatre musician. With the courage to be unconventional, he left out the "knick-knags" and "improbabilities" of the operetta. After the premiere one of the reviewers foretold that half a dozen tunes from “THE SMALL CAFÉ” had the potential of becoming a world hit. A masterful score that should be rediscovered.
