KATAKI is Japanese and means enemy. The action in this play takes place on a jungle island in the Pacific Ocean during the Second World War and tells the story of an American and a Japanese soldier, who attempt to unite their individual views on life, even though they do not understand each others language. The author has succeeded in creating great dramatic tension and interest around the two enemies. The American mainly talks about his house back home, his girlfriend and all the daily chores that he misses, while the Japanese soldier communicates his views in an almost pantomime manner.
