In Chinese literature there are four classic novels that are all written in the time during the Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) and they all represent different genres. One of them is the mythological novel JORNEY TO THE WEST (XIYOU JI), from which Mary Zimmermann has created a successful dramatisation. It is the amazing story about the monk Xuan Zang’s accomplishments and experiences during his journey to west India (629-645). He is accompanied by three half-human creatures – Sun, the monkey, Chu the pig and Sand the monk. The story describes a series of comic situations and exciting battles with various demons and devils which the monk and his followers must fight using supernatural weapons and magic powers. The play suggests a physically oriented and theatrical set.
“Part vaudeville, part mystical dreamscape and Eastern-inflected ballet, Zimmerman’s meticulously choreographed production is a fabulous balancing act that stunningly juxtaposes the rambunctious energy and low comedy of a Wizard of Oz-like trip with the lyrical beauty of Chinese poetry and the mysterious revelations of a religious search.” – Chicago Sun Times
