This latest play by Rainald Goetz had its grand opening in December 1999 at the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. It is an art drama based on the American kitsch artist Jeff Koons. Goetz personally calls it a ‘pop fairytale’. It tells the story of a young man who is constantly surrounded by decadent and selfish wannabe artists, when suddenly he falls in love with the Italian porn star, Cicciolina. High spirited from love he decides to go out into the world to create real art. Eventually, he is doing so well that he launches a firm, similar to Andy Warhol’s Factory. Additionally, he employs a wannabe artist because marketing has become more important to him than the quality of art. Consequently and surprisingly, his pieces come alive to somehow justify themselves in front their creator. The culmination of it all comes in form of an orgy of sex and murder at a private viewing. All in the name of art.
