This play in two acts, takes place in what is seemingly, a mental hospital. The staff refer to it as being a ‘home of convalescence and rest’. The patients are never seen and do not have names but are numbered instead. So the personnel, dressed in grey suits are the only people on stage.
A former military man named Roote, is the supervisor, Gibbs is his subordinate and Miss Cutts is their mutual mistress. Most of the time, the threesome is trying to unravelled two mysteries: firstly the death of patient 6457 and secondly the fact that patient 6459 has given birth to a child. Eventually, suspicions are directed at Lamb, who appears to be just as innocent as his name but as it turns out he is subject to sadistic experiments. In the end, he reports to Whitehall that the personnel have been killed by the patients in a blood orgy.
The play is set on Christmas Day and holds several references to Easter; a child is born, a man dies, a Father is missing so Lamb is accused and prosecuted.
However, the Christian references are not profound.
