A well composed comedy about a couple, Eddie and Irene, whom we are introduced to. We follow them from their wedding night in 1954 to their final break-up in 2004, when they are once again located in the same hotel room. We encounter the couple in three different stages of their lives: as 18-, 43- and 67-year-old. The story lines of the three constellations are ingeniously weaved into each other without interacting - no one leaves the room. For instance, the 18-year-olds can make love while the 67-year-old sit on the bed and reminisces his or hers younger self. The story begins in 1954, when the poor, but smitten couple commences their marriage in a honeymoon suite paid by the bride’s father. In 1979 they have a grown daughter. Eddie works in the fishing industry while Irene is having an affair with another man, and additionally considers the marriage as a finished chapter in her life. In 2004, Irene has become a baroness with a career in politics, whilst Eddie has become owner of the hotel, and lives a miserable life. The play has many surprising and entertaining scenes and offers fantastic roles to actors of many ages. For the play, Bean received ‘The 2003 Pearson New Play of the Year Award’.
