Philip is a sociologist, who from his desk has formed a theory of how to solve the world’s population problem. Diana is an obstetrician, who is daily struggling with concrete problems concerning births and abortions. Phillip brings his theoretical way of treating women’s problems into their marriage, and attempts to overcome his wife’s independence by claiming that her role in life is to have a child. She is impregnated against her will, and this causes a strong mental disorder in her. She aborts, and the tables have now turned, regarding the power-relationship between the two. She leaves him, and in the final act, she is to defend her doctoral thesis when she is overwhelmed by guilt. The aborted foetus appears in the mirror.
