De Vega's seventeenth-century play takes its name from an Andalusia hill town whose oppressed inhabitants bravely rebelled in 1476, resulting in the killing of the tyrannical military overlord. Adrian Mitchell's adaptation, commissioned by the Royal National Theatre, was produced at the Cottesloe Theatre in 1989.
