3 F / 7 M This is a highly comical fable from 1981, taking place 100 years ago, in the Russian village Kulyenchikov. It starts when a new teacher arrives, ignorant of the fact that his many predecessors have eagerly escaped the place. Simply because, neither sense nor education has been able to conquer the incredible stupidity that reigns among the inhabitants, due to a curse lasting 200 years. For instance, they do not even know the most common words, and so instead they simply replace them with similar sounding noises. Inevitably, this leads to many grotesque and mad misunderstandings. The new teacher Leon is especially bid welcome by Dr. Zubritsky and his wife, as they are so eager for their beautiful daughter Sophia to educate herself, if possible. Instantly and mutually, the teacher and student fall in love and despite the verbal confusions, their hearts comprehend. The comedy is naturally highly entertaining but its current revival might stem from a parallel drawn from its main theme, to the contemporary computer language that is ever so simple to some but real gibberish to outsiders.
