This is the story about the young women who in the period of 1923 to 1961 ended up at Sprogø Woman’s shelter – a treatment home that took care of girls who were in trouble with the law, with the moral of the time or who were declared incompetent because of a mental handicap. They were kept isolated from society on Sprogø, and they lived off the land. A female journalist and author decides to reveal the story by writing a book about the unmentionable subject. With help from a local fisherman she arrives on the island where they explore the abandoned and haunted buildings. Through flashbacks, we follow a young girl and her friend’s plights in the institution, which is led by an ambitious doctor and a conscientious matron – living ghosts from a past not too distant. Who are they, and is the fisherman being truthful? This is a riveting, socially realistic horror, loosely based on a piece of authentic history. A convincing and cunningly constructed drama that makes good use of all its characters!
