This is a successful production made up of ‘March of the Falsettoes’ and ‘Falsettoland’, number 2 and 3 in ‘The Marvin Trilogy’. The first in the trilogy ‘In Trousers’ opened in 1978 and immediately achieved cult status among a minor audience but not until ‘March of the Falsettoes’ arrived in 1982 did it become a success. It took nine years for the eagerly awaited completion materialise. ‘Falsetto-Land’ was received with high praise and when this merger ‘Falesttoes’ opened on Broadway in 1992 it won two Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score.
It is the moving story about Marvin who, in his seventies, leaves his wife in favour of another man. His ex-wife then marries his psychiatrist and eventually Marvin ends up alone. Though two years later, the night before his son’s Bar Mitzvah, Marvin is reunited with an ex-lover but at that point AIDS has also made its appearance.
