The American Leopold Kessler arrives in Germany after the Second World War, to find a Europe in ruins. With a naïve desire to help the country back on its feet, he works as a conductor in a sleeper. He wants to stay completely neutral, but that is indeed easier said than done, because in no time he becomes involved in a political struggle for power over the ruined land: The Nazi terror group Werwolf provides him with a bomb which is to be detonated in the train on a bridge.
