Svava Jakobsdóttir has been of great importance to Icelandic society and literature. This play is based on a series of her novels which are all marked by a special view on absurdity – especially when it comes to women’s conditions of life. The stories are woven into each other, thus it is not a traditional drama, but rather a masquerading, rich and picturesque allegory about the human being of the modern world. In “GIVE EACH OTHER” a young bride chops off her left hand to give it to her beloved. However, she will have to go into the prosthesis forest to regain life. “A STORY FOR CHILDREN” is about a mother who literally sacrifices her sanity and her heart for her family. “CRAB, WEDDING, DEATH” is the story about the well-read yet death-marked girl who is engaged to the perfect man who builds her a perfect home she will never have the chance to experience. “KITCHEN MEASURES” is the story about the man who dreams about perfection and builds a kitchen so advanced his wife cannot make use of it. In “COMPANY BY THE STONE WALL” a woman has invited her friends over to the luxurious house with the precious husband who would rather not live too long. “THE PREGNANT WOMAN” is about the young girl who looks forward to having a baby, but who ends up having tons of babies. The play premiered with great success at Iceland’s National Theatre in December 2005. In April 2005, the show received the prestigious award Menningarverðlaun DV for play of the year.
