In this play that takes place at an undertaker’s office in Dublin, we follow the alcoholic manager John. On the day of Christmas Eve, his temporary young assistant Mark, probes into his past and so John begins his desperate story. Then totally unexpectedly, John’s daughter Mary shows up after 10 years apart, urging him to visit his ex-wife, who is in hospital dying of cancer.
Effectively, it is a most gripping, new Irish drama about an undertaker’s dilemma between alcohol and family. Undoubtedly, it sounds like a terribly gloomy story, though nevertheless, the young McPherson’s talent for dramatic poetry has lifted the play up to an accessible tragicomic format that is truly enthralling.
