Patrick Marber’s play is loosely based on Moliere’s DON JUAN from 1665, and the plots take place in present Soho, London. The result is a funny, black and hazardously sexy comedy. Don Juan (or DJ) is an aristocrat who will get a woman into bed with him at any cost, without ever worrying about the consequences. Elvira is a warm-hearted and faithful aid to developing countries, who he once married – and left. Her Irish brothers want a vengeance and even kill him when he refuses to regret his actions. Before all this, we set out on catastrophic adventures on the Thames with DJ and his companion, and with a living statue of Charles II that does not accept party invitations. Marber’s script is filled with exhilarating dialogues and dirty jokes. Perhaps it is not as philosophical as Moliere’s original, but it is relevant and outrageously entertaining.
