This play was the last work of Bernanos before he died in 1948. The play is set during the French revolution and retells the story of how the nuns of a Carmelite-convent are being persecuted and killed because of their religion. In this play Bernanos exposes the human and timeless tension between fear of death and faith, between terror and courage whilst he establishes the precise problems of Christianity in relation to these concepts. In the four female leading characters Bernanos has created vived figures of his ideas, which in his authorship he brought forward through paradox of fear, suffering and weakness as valuable and positive powers, forces of redemption, change and explanation. The message, the language and the scenic form of the play makes it absolutely amazing.
