Demokraten portrays the public speaker and journalist Peter Sabroe’s turbulent life fighting for the little people in Denmark around the 1900’s. Sabroe was colourful- and tremendously controversial. He often created problems for himself and his surroundings because he could not help but interfere if he saw injustice. He got involved in conflicts with both the bourgeoisie and landowners- but also with his own friends and persons of the same opinions. The musical portrays in both a big format and intimate interplay a great man’s struggle for a higher goal, but also the scandals and human sacrifices the battle would cost. Sabroe became one of the founders of the social Danish welfare state but perhaps he went further that what was reasonable. His wife, Thyra Møller got sick and weakened; his friends were severely tried. Demokraten is therefore also the story about what happens in the home when a great man puts all his effort on his outside functions. Demokraten is music theatre for both young people and adults about a piece of Denmark history. As a musical, it is full of the spectacular effects of the musical theatre and a fresh musical style blending rhythmical and classical musical styles.
