A riveting portrayal of the relationship between two societal outsiders, a Moroccan immigrant named Ali and an elderly German cleaning lady named Emmi. This is the story about two lonely people who come together in an odd marriage despite the discrimination of their co-workers and the dissociation of their family. ”Angst Essen Seele Auf” is a fierce statement against the fear of the unknown and its problem is still relevant today. Ali develops a stomach ulcer because of the discrimination and a stressful working environment, and even though Emmi takes care of him at the hospital, the ulcer will keep coming back. In Fassbinder’s mind, the ulcer is created by society, and it will not go away until society has become more humane.
