Henrik Scharling

Henrik Scharling, 1836-1920, Danish theologian and author, son of C.E Scharling and brother of W. Scharling. In 1867, he became lecturer in theology at the University of Copenhagen and was from 1870 to 1916 professor of ethics and philosophy of religion. His polemicises vigorously opposed both contemporary culture radical currents as Grundtvigianism and evangelical revivals. Among his most important books are HUMANITY AND CHRISTIANITY, 1-2 (1872-74), CHRISTIAN MORALITY BY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CONCEPTION, 1-2 (1885-86). Since Scharling’s youth he had also written more romantic novels, one of which, VED NYÅRSTID I NØDDEBO PRÆSTEGÅRD, was later adapted for the stage and performed at Folketeatret.
